We can’t do without food, and the best way to improve food security is to make its production local and sustainable.
World Food Day is an international event, celebrated every year on the 16th of October. It is an opportunity for organisations to bring awareness to food resilience and the importance of sustainable agriculture.
This year, World Food Day in Fiji was incorporated into the National Agriculture Show. The key theme of the event, which took place over several days, was: ‘Be resilient, sustainable and productive.’
Live & Learn’s Atoll Food Futures (AFF) team was invited to showcase activities including sustainable food-resilient technologies such as the Biofilta Foodcube, and other forms of container gardening.
AFF focuses on supporting vulnerable communities to improve their food resilience and reduce their reliance on imported food. In Fiji this is done by working with households on agriculture skills and how to grow food at home.
The AFF program is a multi-country project operating in Tuvalu, Kiribati and Fiji. Through AFF Live & Learn hopes to improve food production using various methods, with an emphasis on local knowledge and community-based solutions.
Project staff at the National Agriculture Show reported a lot of interest from community members, schools and stakeholders. The AFF booth even received a visit from the President of Fiji, the Minister of Agriculture and the Assistant Minister of Agriculture, who all thanked Live & Learn for supporting climate resilience in Fiji.
The Atoll Food Futures Program is an Australian Aid initiative, implemented by Live & Learn Environmental Education on behalf of the Australian Government.
