Story:

Youth leaders thinking ecologically

An Ecological Thinking workshop was held in Honiara, Solomon Islands in June (2023), to train youth club leaders from Honiara City Council (HCC) and the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA). Seventeen HCC youth club leaders and twenty-four YWCA youth club leaders attended two workshops.

Young leaders developed ecological thinking skills through a series of activities that helped them understand the interdependence of human beings and nature, the importance of ecosystems, and how these relate to personal experiences of climate change. This knowledge will be taken to youth clubs across Honiara, to strengthen community resilience to climate change impacts, potentially reaching hundreds of other young people.

Workshop participants engaged in fun, hands-on activities such as drawing, roleplay and model-making – activities they can replicate easily in youth club settings. Youth club leaders came away from the sessions feeling positive about what they had learned and confident about sharing these awareness activities with their clubs.

The workshops and accompanying facilitation guide were made possible as part of Plan International’s Safer Cities for Girls program, which is supported by the Australian Government, through the Australian NGO cooperation program (ANCP).
