Live & Learn Solomon Islands and partners recently held a three-day workshop to train and equip community leaders with basic knowledge and skills for disaster preparedness, under the Disaster READY program. The program represents Australia’s largest ever investment in disaster preparedness in the region.

Representatives from the High Way and Mosquito communities, on the outskirts of Burns Creek in East Honiara, were trained to analyse the context of disaster reduction, including geography, potential risks, perceptions of risks, and opportunities for action. Communities were supported in formulating disaster response plans.

The workshop was coordinated with the help of the Honiara City Council (Disaster Management Division), the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (Division of Meteorology services), The Solomon Islands Organization of People with Disability (PWDSI) and the Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP) Country Coordination team.
