What are the ingredients for sustainable waste management?
Rapid increases in development and consumption has put a strain on infrastructure in the Maldives, to the point where waste management has become a significant concern. This report aimed to support resort operators with waste management, through an assessment of existing systems and both local and organisational perspectives of waste.
While this report was able to make recommendations for improved waste management systems, it also found that awareness was foundational to the success of these systems. Fundamentally, it shows that a paradigm shift in thinking about waste is required: from thinking about waste as something to be discarded, to waste as something that has value on site.
