Hazard and Environmental Considerations in Toilet Design

This is a practical training manual prepared for community workers providing training to community-based sanitation enterprises in Vanuatu in how to advise customers on selection of appropriate toilet design, and safe location of different types of toilets. The types of toilets range from VIP latrines, compost toilets and flush toilets connected to a septic.

The manual contains a training schedule, and step-by-step instructions for the range of issues that need to be considered when a person or family decides to improve their household toilet – including cost, management of solid waste, and potential natural and environmental hazards.

The manual supports the information provided in the guide Clean Communities: A practical guide to building and maintaining toilets in the Pacific. The manual was produced by Live & Learn Vanuatu, and is available in English and Bislama. Publication was supported by the Australian government, through the Civil Society WASH Program.
