How can we reduce the risk of wildfire in the context of climate change?
The incidence of wildfire in forests is increasing due to global warming, posing a significant threat to the biodiversity of the world's remaining forests and the livelihoods of the people living in and around them. Furthermore, fires pose a risk to the carbon stored in forests and could further exacerbate the effects of climate change.
To meet this challenge, Live and Learn have developed a Fire Management Plan for the Via River Catchment Area in West New Britain, Papua New Guinea. It includes background information on climate change and fire risk, as well as a set of recommendations that communities and local governments can implement. It has also been designed to guide the design of fire management plans by communities throughout the region and the rest of Papua New Guinea.
